A useful AI photo prompt can be treated like a compact creative brief. The first section identifies the subject and the most important things that should remain consistent. The second establishes the scene. Lighting, style and composition then tell the editor how to present the result.
Start with the subject. Mention the person, pose and important identity characteristics. If the uploaded image is the reference, explicitly say that the person in the source photo is the main subject and should remain recognizable.
Next describe the scene. “A rooftop at sunset” is more useful than “make it beautiful.” Add only the environmental details that matter: skyline, plants, architecture, rain, festival decorations or another clear setting.
Lighting comes next. Choose one primary direction or mood. Examples include soft morning light, dramatic side lighting, warm candlelight or cool moonlight. If you add multiple competing lighting descriptions, the model may produce inconsistent results.
Style should explain the finish rather than replace the scene. Cinematic photography, editorial portrait, polished illustration and vintage film are different treatments. If you want an effect such as film grain or a subtle glow, make it a supporting detail.
Finally, describe composition. Mention vertical portrait, centered subject, medium shot, close-up, shallow depth of field or room for cropping. This is particularly important when the final image will be used on a website or social platform.
A good prompt is also easy to revise. If the first result is too dark, change the lighting instruction. If the subject is too small, change the framing. Clear structure turns experimentation into a repeatable process.
Quick checklist
- Subject: who or what must stay consistent
- Scene: where the photo takes place
- Lighting: how the scene is illuminated
- Style: the visual treatment
- Composition: how the final image is framed
